Meg Welch is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) and holds a Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology (M.A.C.P.) from Yorkville University. She works with adults and teenagers individually and with couples, with particular expertise in 2SLGBTQIA+ affirmative therapy and LGBTQ couples counselling.

Background

Meg brings experience from school and community support settings, where she worked with young people and families across a range of circumstances and backgrounds. This grounding in community-facing work has given her a practical, people-first orientation to therapy — she is interested in clients as whole people, not only in the presenting concern that brings them through the door.

Meg is a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and brings both personal and professional knowledge to her work with queer and trans clients. She understands the particular challenges that can arise around identity — including coming out, navigating family relationships, managing the effects of discrimination and minority stress, and finding affirming care — as well as the ways in which these challenges intersect with other aspects of a person’s life and wellbeing.

Approach

Meg takes a client-centred, eclectic approach. She draws from multiple therapeutic frameworks depending on the needs of the individual or couple she is working with, rather than applying a single fixed method. She places particular value on the quality of the therapeutic relationship — on building a genuine sense of trust, safety, and openness early in the work, and on holding the vulnerability involved in therapy with real care. Meg works in queer identity, relationship diversity, or non-normative ways of living.

Specializations

Meg’s areas of clinical specialization include 2SLGBTQIA+ affirmative therapy, LGBTQ couples counselling, anxiety, depression, self-confidence, and chronic illness. She works with individuals navigating questions of identity and belonging, mental health concerns, relationship difficulties, and the psychological impact of chronic physical health conditions.

Her couples work includes LGBTQ couples counselling and queer-affirmative relationship therapy. She brings specific attentiveness to the dynamics that can arise in queer relationships — including the effects of internalized homophobia or transphobia, navigating family-of-origin tensions, communication and conflict in same-sex partnerships, and the particular stressors that LGBTQ couples may face. Meg works with couples at all stages and in all configurations, and is affirming of diverse relationship structures including polyamorous and non-monogamous partnerships.

In individual therapy, Meg works with clients on anxiety and chronic stress, depression and low mood, self-esteem and confidence, identity and coming out, the effects of trauma, and living with chronic illness. She works with teenagers as well as adults, and has experience supporting young people through some of the specific challenges that arise in adolescence and early adulthood — including identity, family dynamics, and the transition to adulthood.
